Based on the television special “Christmas Eve on Sesame Street” written by Jon Stone and Joseph A. Bailey.

This story opens with folks enjoying themselves on Sesame Street the night before Christmas.

All is going well until Oscar the Grouch tells Big Bird that Santa won’t be coming because the chimney is too narrow for him to slide down. Big Bird decides to camp out on the roof top and wait for Santa, which causes folks to worry and look for him. He is finally found and assured by the presents under the tree that Santa has indeed found a way to make his deliveries.
Perhaps more interesting is the side story that of the gift exchange between Ernie and Bert that is reminiscent of the story of The Gift of the Magi (look here). Bert sells his paper clip collection in order to buy a soap dish to hold Ernie’s Rubber Duckie.

In the meantime, Ernie sells Rubber Duckie in order to buy a cigar box to hold Bert’s paper clip collection.
Later, they open each other’s present and feel sad until Mr. Hooper, who runs the general store, comes by and gives them their paper clip collection and Rubber Duckie as gifts. For his part, Mr. Hooper says that he has received the best gift of all: seeing an act of unselfish love between two friends.
